The system comprises a base unit for the Metcal power supply box, an electric
eye sensor that is installed in the tip holder, and a power cord. The sensor
detects the position of the iron and relays this information to the control
box. With the tip preheat on, the TMS4000 provides a pulse of power every 20
s to the soldering station. With the tip preheat off, the system generates
power only when the operator lifts the soldering iron from the holder. The
control unit measures just 4.6 (W) x 4.9 (D) x 1.5 (H) in.
