These are mounted on the frame of a door, and you drop a 2 by 4 or similar piece of lumber across the door into the hooks. This keeps the door from being opened from the outside, because the bar or 2 by 4 piece of lumber is blocking the door.
To open the door simply lift the 2 by 4 out of the way.
This has proven to be one of the absolute BEST ways to secure a storeroom rear door.
